The Birchwood Process

I start with a piece of birchwood ply and solid birchwood or maple studs. After sawing all boards to specified project lengths. I begin to glue the frame to the face then allow several days to dry. After a light sanding and cleaning, to ensure a proper bond with the first coat of archival sealant. I apply the first coat front and back of sealant followed by a day or two of drying. Then following with a second coat of sealant on the face and borders. After drying, I apply an archival gesso (paint and glue mix) to act as a primer. After drying and light sanding a second coat of gesso is applied to the face and borders. Depending on effect of texture, I may repeat this process up to 5 times. Next the fun part, the color stage. To achieve a flowing effect the background and foreground are all painted in one sitting. The goal is to create several layers of paint on top of each other while trapping air in between the layers. After the paint is layered, I use several forces including gravity, airflow, and a torch to bring the air molecules to the surface creating all of the little bubbles. After drying several days, I then apply the final sealant using several coats of an archival varnish with a 70% UV resistance. Thus, leaving you with a work that can be enjoyed for generations.

Standard size canvas orders are usually completed and ready for delivery in around 3-4 weeks. Custom canvas sizes up 6ft x 8ft can be ordered but take 4-6 weeks.

All birchwood orders take 4-6 weeks.
