The Birchwood Process

Each piece begins with a sheet of birch plywood and solid birch or maple framing studs. After cutting all components to the required dimensions, I carefully glue the frame to the panel face and allow it to cure for several days.

Once the piece has dried, it is lightly sanded and cleaned to ensure a proper bond with the first coat of archival sealant. I apply the sealant to both the front and back surfaces, then allow it to dry for one to two days. A second coat of sealant is then applied to the face and edges of the piece.

After the sealant has cured, I apply an archival gesso—a specialized mixture that serves as both a primer and foundation for the artwork. Once dry, the surface is lightly sanded before a second coat of gesso is applied to the face and borders. Depending on the desired texture and effect, this process may be repeated up to five times.

Next comes the most exciting stage: color. To achieve the flowing movement and depth that characterize my work, the background and foreground are painted in a single session. The goal is to build multiple layers of paint while trapping air between them.

Once the paint has been layered, I use a combination of gravity, airflow, and heat from a torch to bring the trapped air to the surface, creating the distinctive bubbles and organic patterns that make each piece unique.

After the artwork has dried for several days, I apply multiple coats of archival varnish with 70% UV resistance. The result is a durable, museum-quality finish designed to preserve the artwork for generations to come.

Standard size canvas orders are usually completed and ready for delivery in around 3-4 weeks. Custom canvas sizes up 6ft x 8ft can be ordered but take 4-6 weeks.
